Box 16b: Numerical Ageing (Absolute Increase)
Currently Tasmania has approximately 75,000 people aged 65+ years. This number has grown steadily over the past several decades, but the rate of growth is projected to increase with the ageing of the baby boom cohort, and numbers will double by the 2040s. They will remain around 150,000 until sometime beyond mid century. Notable is that most of the growth will be over by the mid- to late 2030s; those building infrastructure to accommodate the growth rate should take particular note.
