The journey to 500,000
This slide shows the annual and cumulative growth in Tasmania's population since 1902. A decade of zero growth across the 1990s has more recently been overshadowed by a strong burst of natural increase (the difference between births and deaths) and equally strong net migration. Currently natural increase is accounting for a little over half the total growth, while international migration is accounting for around 30 per cent, and interstate migration, 20 per cent.
